Gemstone Grading Scale
Gemstones are graded differently from diamonds, despite some similarities in the process. While diamonds are graded on the 4Cs (carat weight, colour, clarity, and cut), other gemstones are evaluated based on different criteria that are specific to each type of gemstone.
For example, when grading coloured gemstones like sapphires, emeralds, and rubies, colour plays a crucial role in determining their quality. Factors such as intensity, hue, and saturation of the colour are all carefully evaluated.
“AAA” grade is assigned to a gemstone that is considered to “being near perfect.” Though these stones do show some variation in color, they are clean, well cut and polished that show the best features both in cut and colour.
“AA” - grade is assigned to a gemstone of high quality that has very few inclusions, good color, transparent and have a nice cut that lets light through to sparkle.
“A” grade is assigned to a gemstone of good quality that may have some visible inclusions, good color, and a decent cut. They will appear less shiny than the higher grades.
In addition to colour, gemstone grading will evaluate other factors, such as transparency, brilliance, luster, as well as any inclusions or flaws present in the stone. The precise standards utilized for grading a particular gemstone will depend on the specific type of gemstone being evaluated.
